It's All About the Benjamins...

Stepping back from the whole situation has showed me the true scary side of sports. We are led to believe as fans that an athlete double crossing his team is no different that a normal shmoe taking a higher pay from a rival firm, right? Wrong. When you get into making 10 million plus per year, an extra $5 million isn't going to make a difference.

Greed overcomes any fan rivalry with athletes.

The Jason Variteks of the world are hard to find, hometown discounts to stay with a community. Everyone else is out for themselves and they don't care about the Joe Shmoe fan.

Glavine left Atlanta. McGwire left Oakland. Tejada left Oakland. Bonds left Pittsburgh. Clemens left Boston. Shaq left Orlando. Furcal left Atlanta. Gretzky left Canada. Kareem left Milwaukee. Giambi left Oakland. Walton left Portland. Mussina left Baltimore. Kemp left Seattle. A-Rod and Griffey left Seattle. Within the next three years, LeBron will leave Cleveland.

These are just the facts, and with Damon added to that list, I feel like I just don't care anymore. Athletes can keep screwing fans over and nothing will ever be done about it.

Heeeeeeeere's Johnny!

I will always remember Game 7 of the sacred 2004 ALCS. Damon hit 2 dingers, 6 RBIs and sealed the deal for the greatest comeback in history. I knew right then and there, he would be a Red Sox forever. Wrong. But I will still never forget the magic of that amazing season and more amazing playoffs. With that said...

Johnny, Johnny, Johnny...your intelligence was never reputable but who knew you were this incredibly mentally crippled? You establish yourself as an icon in the city of Boston (a city notorious for being slow to warm to a player) then stomp on the hearts and souls of the very people you brought to the promised land 1 year ago. This move is completely unprecedented. I can only assume Mr. Suck Boras had about 90% of the say in this while you had somewhere around 10%.

Seriously, lets think about what you have just done. You have signed on to a team which is notoriously hated by your former team. So hated they are known to have the greatest rivalry in sports. Such a rivalry they play each other some 18 times per year. 18 times per year means 9 in the Bronx...and 9 at Fenway. Those are going to be 9 opportunities for you to be assaulted by a veangful Red Sox fan...remember the way Mets fans treated John Rocker a few years ago? I hope you practice dodging D and C batteries in spring training.

But wait, knowing you Mr. "Caveman" you will expect Boston fans to say, "big deal, we love you Johnny!" Hell no. The Johnny Damon we knew for the past 3 years is dead, 6 feet under cremated. The new, clean-shaven, Giambi-cut Johnny Damon may as well change his moniker to "John Damon" to reflect how incredibly boring the Yankees persona actually is. Enjoy an environment where the fans don't love you cause you are a hometown boy, or for what you've done in history, because if you don't produce for the Boss, you can expect to be gone. Most of all, prepare to surrender your spotlight to A-Rod, Randy Johnson, and the venerable Derek Jeter. You are no longer an icon, caveman, Jesus, etc. You are a body in a lineup that will be expected to get a hit at least 3/10 times, and then wait for Mr. Jeter and A-Rod to get you home. Your social aspect in CF has just disappeared.

You had it all Johnny. And you had to mess it up. All I can say is I don't feel bad for you in the least about the first time you return to Fenway. I hope you leave with Energizer imprinted in the back of your head. Break a leg Damon. No, really. Trip on a sprinkler head in the Bronx like Mantle did and break you leg.

The Times Are A-Changin'

Happy Trails Edgah Renteria!

The Boston Red Sox today traded Renteria to the Atlanta Braves for their top prospect 3B Andy Marte. It seems only yesterday that Renteria was considered to be the biggest free agent signing of the offseason for the Sox, only to go on to play horrid defense and an even worse bat. Maybe the Braves will work their magic and turn Edgar back into the SS he once was. Good luck Bobby Cox! Who knows, Edgah could be a better fit in the Braves clubhouse, being more quiet and less of an event in the city.

Happy Trails Kevin Millar!

The Red Sox will not be resigning El Bencho, and while he had a terrible season this past year, his prescence on the team will be missed. Lest we forget his coining of "Cowboy Up", "Don't let us win today...", "Manny being Manny" and the Born in the USA karaoke rally video. He turned a 40 guys, 40 cabs team into 40 guys, 1 big freakin limo. Best of luck to him wherever he goes, if only his talent had matched his enthusiasm in Boston.

Happy Trails Doug Mirabelli!

The knuckle-catcher was always a hometown favorite for the past few years and even if his bat is not missed, his glove will be in that Wakefield was 16-8 with a 3.66 ERA when Mirabelli caught him, compared to an abysmal 0-4 with a 8.66 ERA throwing to Jason Varitek. They just don't make knuckleball catchers anymore so does this mean the end for Tim Wakefield? I guess this will be yet to be seen.

Welcome, Mark Loretta!

While I'm quite happy to have a capable 2B, the first since Todd Walker of '03, I question the move when Graffanino was the surprise of the '05 season. I figured the Sox could have resigned Graffanino for relatively cheap, but I guess they have other plans...which puzzles me further that they have just offered arbitration to Graf, Mueller and Damon.

Bottom line? We need a GM. Oh, and a SS...is that Nomar's cell phone I hear ringing?

An Unlikely Ending

SEC Champions Georgia Bulldawgs!!!

In a season that began with both Florida and Tennessee predicted to finish ahead of the unsure Bulldogs, not many people saw this coming. Slightly favored LSU simply got whipped by D.J. Shockley and the Georgia defense. I had the privilege of sitting 17th row in the LSU section and got to see the pain on the cajuns faces up close and personal. LSU did not have a chance from the outset of the game. UGA was dominant on both side of the ball, especially D. The sacks and INTs just kept coming.

I give all the credit in the world to Coach Richt and Shockley, who came into this season as the biggest question mark in the SEC, but ended up buying himself a ticket to a late-round pick in this summer's NFL draft. Shockley's selfless play and attitude will be valued as a potential back up QB in the NFL. Name one other QB in college football who has the ability that Shockley has shown this season and waited 4 years to show it, thats right, you can't.

Congrats Georgia Bulldogs, you bought yourself yet another ticket back to Atlanta for the Sugar Bowl. I'll be sad to say goodbye to Shockley, Jennings and Pope after the Sugar Bowl. Oh well, at least I'll still see Mr. Pope sleeping in my History class.

Stumbling, bumbling, fumbling...

The second saddest team in the NFL continued their quest for the number one pick today, as the Jets laid down to the Pats in a pathetic 16-3 losing effort. Same story as every week, the D shows up and holds a team to under 20 points and the nonexistent offense has its usual series of 3 and outs and turnovers. If the damn Texans hadn't blown it against Baltimore in the last 20 seconds, then the Jets would have begun producing Reggie Bush jerseys. Oh well, if we miss out on Bush, maybe we can take Leinart.

Sad But True

True story, straight out of New York...

A seven year old boy was at the center of a New York courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over who should have custody of him. The boy had a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible. The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her. When the judge suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with cheld welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the New York Jets, whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

And now on to the SEC Championship...

LSU vs UGA in the ATL, and obvious home field advantage for UGA and their second trip into Atlanta in as many weeks. The Tigers are only picked by 2 points, so I'm hoping to see a big game. With seniors Greg Blue, D.J. Shockley and Bryan McClendon playing in their last big SEC game, I hope to see some big plays. If UGA is going to win this game they are going to need to force turnovers. Coming into the season, the Dawgs were picked to finish behind Florida and Tennessee in the East; now is their big chance to prove they are not pretenders. I'll be in the lower section, on the 40 yard line, row 17, smack dab in the middle of the LSU fanbase. I can only pray there is no humiliating blow out.

But wait...the most compelling game of the weekend is tonight, in the NBA.

The Hawks (2-12) play the Raptors (1-15) tonight at Philips arena. With a combined record of 3-27 this will go in the books as the worst NBA matchup of two teams record-wise in the history of the NBA. It will be remembered (or forgotten) as the battle for the number 1 pick. So go on Hawks, don't screw this up and win tonight, forget about this season, and start scouting.

Wake Up Mike, You're Dreaming.

6. Memo to Michael Vick: 228 passing yards, one TD and three second-half points is not a sign that you're the second coming of Dan Marino.
The league's most underutilized wide receiver feels that he answered his critics by lighting up the Miami defense for 17 points on Sunday. I wasn't impressed. And, yes, I'm well aware that Vick has been at the scene of a lot of Atlanta victories.
You know what? Trent Dilfer once was spotted at a Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl party. It didn't make Dilfer a top-flight quarterback. I would label Vick the Human Highlight Film II, but it would be a disservice to Dominique Wilkins, who at least put stats on the board.
- from ESPN Page 2's Jason Whitlock

HAHA I couldn't resist. The truth hurts sometimes. It's OK though Mike, you'll get some respect someday.

We're Screwed.

The honeymoon is officially over.

Happy trails Theo Epstein! You can leave Boston assured that Larry Lucchino woke up this morning feeling like he went on a bender (which is a true possibility). This tumultuous affair will go down as yet another blunder in the history of Red Sox front office dealings.

The Red Sox, as of right now, do not have a GM or assistant GM. Slugger Manny Ramirez wants out of town, a deal which could end up like an A-Rod situation where the Sox are forced to eat some of his contract in order to move him. Flimsy-armed Johnny Damon is insisting on a 5-year deal and no one knows if he will be healthy this year. David Ortiz is not happy with the unrest and vacancies in the GM position. Oh, and this is all days before the busiest period of free agent negotiations begins.

Let the blame game begin. Boston papers will for sure be trashing Theo, claiming he screwed the Red Sox, he was power mongrel, he was too young and overly ambitious...etc, etc. The list of Theo-trashing will go on and on, but may never reach the true point of it all: This is all that bastard Lucchino and the Nation's fault.

Have we overstepped our boundaries of obsession? Have we become too hardcore fans? Manny seems to think so. Boomer Wells may think the same. Theo definitely thought so. It's well known that no player, whether you are David Ortiz or Kevin Youkilis, can go out to eat, shop, or see a movie without being bombarded by autograph hounds and photographers. The Red Sox are Boston's mini-Hollywood.

The fans love has become too strong towards the team. It's much like the VH1 show Breaking Bonaduce, where Danny Bonaduce's concept of love is abusing himself and mentally abusing his wife, with an onslaught of demanding that she love him back, putting her in a situation where alkl she wants is out of the relationship; much like we are now seeing in the city of Boston.

This excerpt is from an article in the Globe today:

''He told me he had to clear his desk, that it was very emotional, that he had to leave the team," said former Tigers GM Bill Lajoie, Epstein's 71-year-old special assistant. ''He said he didn't have any plans but that he had to get away from the team."

Which seems to say it all, as Theo needs to get away from not the team, but the fans. The amount of time and energy required to be the GM of the Boston Red Sox is unimaginable. Sure, Brian Cashman is in the same situation, but he doesn't want more control as Theo does. Cashman has accepted his role as the middle man between the office and the Boss. Theo felt that he needed that control from Lucchino and he realized he was never going to get it. Not to mention that Dan Shaughnessy ran a column on Sunday that highlighted the bad relationship between Lucchino and Epstein. Great timing Dan, great timing.

Here's a list of the things Theo has done for this club to all the naysayers:
-David Ortiz. He signed him in 2003 for $1.25 million. He stole Ortiz out from under every other team in MLB, most notably the Yankees, as Steinbrenner was once quoted as criticizing Cashman for not getting Ortiz when they had the chance. In those 3 years he has hit 119 HR and 388 RBIs.

-Bronson Arroyo. The future of the pitching staff was signed for $332,500 in 2004 off waivers.

-Kevin Millar. Yes, he had a terrible year, but he performed in 2003-04. He was stolen from the Chunichi Dragons of Japan and became the voice of the Red Sox clubhouse.

-Mike Timlin. He has been an outstanding middle man and was forced into the closer role this year.

-Billy Mueller. Signed in 2003 for $2.1 million and won the AL batting title that year batting .326.

-Curt Schilling. Theo sat down for Thankgiving dinner with the Schillings to convince him to join, and now Curt is a Boston legend. He only gave up Casey Fossum and Brandon Lyons for Schilling.

-Keith Foulke. While he had a disastrous 2005, he singlehandedly was the bullpen in 2004 and was flawless in the playoffs.

-Trading Nomar. The do-or-die deal took big cajones and led to a championship.

-Dave Roberts. "The Steal". Enough said.

-Varitek. The team captain was kept in his true colors.

-Tony Graffanino. He'll be remembered for Buckner part 2 against the White Sox, but he stepped in as a backup utility player and hit .319 winning the starting spot at a vacant 2B.

Fact is, when Theo has done alot of good things for this organization, including a WS ring. The Sox messed up when they should have re-signed him immediatly after the Championship in '04. They played the waiting game and lost. As have all the Boston fans. We will be feeling the aftermath of this for years to come.

And then there was one.

1918. A number used to taunt and ridicule Red Sox fans for years, by Yankee fans who were enjoying their 26 championships they would pile up over the 86 years that Sox fans waited. All that was solved through a most improbable comeback that defied the baseball gods and a swift sweep of the Cardinals, a series in which St. Louis would not spend a single inning with the lead. The Red Sox ghosts and goats are now forgiven and forgotten.

1917. An even more daunting number, remembered by the south-side of Chicago, long proclaimed the lesser of the two Chicago teams. Not since Shoeless Joe and the Blacksox Scandal, immortalized in Hollywood in 8 Men Out and Field of Dreams, had the White Sox even seen a World Series grace the south-side. All of that was solved as the White Sox won in yet another curse ending sweep, allowing the Black Sox to rest in peace once and for all.

1908. Ah, yes, 1908...a number that still has yet to be erased. A number belonging to the other side of Chicago. The pathetic Chicago Cubs. I have realized that this team has nothing respectable about them, other than their decrepid, quaint field that still refrains from playing too many night games per year.

Even the Cubs curse is pathetic compared to the Red and White Sox. The Curse of the Billy Goat. As the story goes, William Sianis, a Greek immigrant who owned a nearby tavern (the now-famous Billy Goat Tavern), had two $7.20 box seat tickets to Game 4 of the 1945 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers and decided to bring his pet goat, Murphy, with him. Sianis and the goat were allowed into Wrigley Field and even paraded about on the playing field before the game before ushers intervened. They were led off the field. After a heated argument, both Sianis and the goat were permitted to stay in the stadium occupying the box seat for which he had tickets. However, before the game was over, Sianis and the goat were ejected from the stadium at the command of Cubs owner Philip Knight Wrigley due to the animal's objectionable odor. Sianis was outraged at the ejection and allegedly placed a curse upon the Cubs that they would never win another pennant or play in a World Series at Wrigley Field again.

That's it. An arbitrary ejection because some moron brought his pet goat to a baseball game is blamed for 97 years of crappy baseball. I can only imagine how many drunken idiots are ejected from places like Miller Park in Milwaukee or Tropicana Field in Tampa who curse the team, but you don't hear of any goofy legends being concocted to explain why the team sucks.

Whats worse is the curse doesn't even compare to the substance of the White and Red Sox. White Sox had a major scandal in which a team threw a championship for money, enough to curse any major league team. The Red Sox traded arguably the greatest player to ever play the game, Babe Ruth. Enough said. The Cubs threw out an immigrant. Not even an American fan.

What's worse is the fact that they blamed yet another fan in 2004 for playing a foul ball. Poor Steve Bartman. How can Cubs fans blame Bartman for that treacherous error committed by Alex Gonzalez that truly gave the game away to the Marlins.

Cubs fans should see no end in sight. They have a "marquee" pitching staff that can't even make through a half-season without getting hurt. They have suspect hitting that relies on players like Derek Lee to explode onto the scene, no garauntees and unpredictable at best.

The only solution I can see for the Cubs would be to trade Nomar Garciaparra. It worked for the Red Sox, so why not? Truthfully though, I would love to see this number stretch to 130 years or so. Cause I don't care about the Cubs. They used to be the team I'd lean on when the Sox blew it, but now the Sox are big time, both colors. The Cubs have been left behind, the red-headed stepchild of the group, the lame duck, the loser in Darwin's theory of evolution.

And good riddance. Someone has to be the loser.

Happy Trails Ozzie Guillen!

Thanks for the quote Ozzie, now leave. Seriously.

Thank God the White Sox won the World Series. No more smack talking from Ozzie Guillen, hopefully forever. Go on Ozzie, leave on top, get out of baseball and jump on a raft back to the D.R.. No one likes you, nor cares about you. Keep your word and get the hell of of dodge.

The White Sox got lucky as hell. Thats the bottom line. I've never seen a team get so many second chances from umpires in one postseason in my life. These guys aren't a perennial World Series team, they are a one and done, wait 88 more years.

Was anyone else annoyed to see Frank Thomas celebrating like he actually helped his team? To me, that was the equivalent of if Nomar had been jumping up and down in the Cubs clubhouse after Boston won last year. Frank, you spent the majority of the year on the DL and weren't even on the playoff roster. You haven't put up a good year in 3 years, go jump on the raft with Ozzie and disappear.

After watching Vinny fumble the ball 3 times in 4 possessions on Monday, I can safely say that the New York Jets are going to get a pretty good draft pick this year. I would love to give the Falcons all the credit in the world for beating a broken team, but they didn't do anything. 3 fumbles=17-0 very quickly. The Jets beat themselves, period. Mike Vick had the worst game of his career throwing 3 INT and gathering a 16.0 passer rating.

Yes, the Falcons are a rushing team, but find me a team that has won or even reached the Super Bowl with the 29th ranked passing game in the NFL. If Vick ever played a game like that against likely AFC Championship opponent Philadelphia, the Falcons would lose by a catastrophic margin. The Eagles shut down an unstoppable LT against the Chargers this past Sunday, which gives plenty of reason to think that Philly can stop Dunn.

Theo Epstein and Larry Lucchino are at a standstill in negotiations for Theo's new contract. Give him the money Sox, you know you have it and the guy brought a championship to Boston. He's due for a raise.
Go BC tonight, knock off the seemingly unstoppable Hokies. Another Thursday night, prime-time game for VT, another 3+ hours of hearing comparisons between Mike Vick and Marcus Vick. Are there any other players on the field?
Quote of the week: "There's two things here: the bad news is, you have to cover me. The good news is you can save money on your car insurance by using Geico."
-Chad Johnson on whoever is covering him this Sunday.

Upset in Vicklanta?

Not if these guys are on their game.

This Monday is looking like it could be an embarassment on national TV for the New York Jets. With no true starting QB, no pro-bowl center, and our only reliable DB Ty Law is questionable with a groin injury. But there is still hope...

Our only chance of beating the Atlanta Falcons on Monday is Curtis "My Favorite" Martin. The Falcons are a bit small up front on the line and there's really no one behind Rod Coleman and Chad Lavalais to back them up. Ed Hartwell is still out and he was their best run defender in the linebacking core. That said, the linebackers have been all shuffled around, resulting in the starting of rookie 5th round pick Michael Boley at WLB. The Falcons are very vulnerable to the run, meaning if the Jets can avoid turnovers and get Martin the ball 25 times, we've got a chance.

If this game falls into the Jets hands, it will be by ball control. With our elderly QB, our only games is controlling the clock. Go ahead, let Vick sit on the sidline for 9 minute drives and keep the quick strike Falcons offense off the field. This cannot be accomplished if Vinny keeps consistent with his trademark toss up every time the pocket collapses around him. Eat the ball Vinny, try again next play.

The Jets are going to have to keep an eye on Brian Finneran and treat him as a no. 1 reciever. Vick seems to hit him for big strikes a few times a game, especially in clutch situations. Michael Jenkins and Vick probably don't have the timing down that Vick has developed with Finneran over the years, not to mention TE/WR Algernon Crumpler.

Ty Law is the x-factor for the Jets D Monday. Without him, D-coord Donnie Henderson will be severely limited in the pass defense and the game will almost certainly be out of hand.

The dagger tommorow night will be the Dunn-Vick running attack. The Jets struggling run-D will be overwhelmed by the end of 4 quarters Monday night.

But lest we forget, Vinny did lead the Monday Night Miracle. ;-)

Prediction: Falcons 30-Jets 20

At least we aren't dealing with a genius...

Manny for Beltran?

for ?

When I logged onto Boston Dirt Dogs this morning, some of my worst fears were confirmed:

1. Boston is once again shopping around Manny

2. They, along with the rest of MLB, have eefectively been punk'd by the Beltran aura

Now, before I start looking too far into this, I hardly think that the Mets are planning on giving up one of their biggest free agent signings ever after just one year. And, why give up a young Beltran for a soon-to-be aging Manny Ramirez. And there is every reason to believe that Pedro is behind ALL OF THIS!
Ok, now, onto the "Beltran aura". This guy has been around for 7 years now. He's a career .282 hitter. He has never hit more than 29 homers in a single season, in fact, the past 3 years, his production has fallen streadily! Now, some argue that hes got speed; well, the past 3 years he has stolen 14, 28, and 17 bases...speed...riiiiight. And what does speed do for the Red Sox anyways? They have always been the win it with the big swing team, never a small ball team. Even if he comes to Boston his SB's will go down yet again.
Need more proof that this Beltran phantom isn't all hes hyped up to be? Past 3 years stikeouts have gone from 44 to 57 to 96! Hmm, who does that number remind me of...oh yeah, Mark Belhorn...(no offense Bel). Given, Manny had more SO than Beltran, BUT he still hit higher avg and drove in more runs. Beltran has only hit over .300 in 2/7 seasons, Manny has done it 9/11 full seasons. The numbers are not even comparable.
Sure, the guy is an obvious upgrade defensively over the girly armed Johnny Damon, but if theres one thing I've learned about the Red Sox in recent years is you do not screw with the chemistry. You think Ortiz is going to be happy about losing his best friend Manny for the quiet and withdrawn Beltran? Hell no! Manny's antics on the field are a part of this team and entertain the fans and players alike, I'll take a few unbelieveably botched plays per year for the 45 HR that come with them.
Manny Ramirez means more to the Boston Red Sox than anyone seems to choose to recognize and it would be a damn shame if management trades him for Beltran (which also means goodbye Damon). Tear apart this team and you will be waging war with the fans who love them. Manny is routinely named the most dangerous right handed hitter in the AL (Sheff too) followed by Papi who is the most dangerous left handed hitter in MLB. Break up this duo and you may not see the playoffs for a while. Especially when you don't have the pitching to back it up.
Remember, all Beltran did to deserve that contract last year was tear up the playoffs. Wow, 12 games=best player in the league? I dont think so.

Paddling Up The Wrong "Rivers"

There has been much talk lately of Philip Rivers moving teams coinciding with the emergence of Drew Brees. The Jets and Dolphins have been a couple of the teams thrown around in the rumor mill and I couldn't be more upset.

Lets get one thing clear: Philip Rivers is not the Jets future.

There is a HUGE QB draft coming up this summer and the last thing the Jets need to do is panic and try to make a rush for the playoffs. Concede the season New York. Get us a top 5 pick and the possibilities are endless.

Here are a few options:

Matt Leinart (SR-USC): not my top pick, but clearly a gamer. Frankly, I'm tired of these pocket passers on New York Jet teams that are statues in the pocket and are helpless against the pass rush if the pocket collapses.

Vince Young (SR-Texas): P-I-M-P and quite frankly, my choice for Heisman. He doesn't have quite as amazing a support team on offense as Leinart does Reggie Bush. He can surely scramble and would be a new revolution in NY, A BLACK QB!

Omar Jacobs (JR-Bowling Green)- unorthodox delivery of the ball but hes got all the tools

Reggie McNeal (SR-Mizzou)- only returning starter from 2004 to avg. 250 in the air and 50 on the ground per game; huge dual threat, would fall in line with the "new age" QBs like Mike Vick, McNabb, etc

All I want is a QB who represents a threat inside and outside the pocket. If the Jets organization is serious about winning a championship, they will stop pretending that Chad Suckington will be rejuvenated and healthy next season and begin the process of moving on. Eat the cap penalties. Either cut him or trade him to Miami or Arizona or some other QB-desperate team.

But all of this is futile I'm sure. We will somehow end up either trading our first round pick for a washed-up veteran like Steve McNair (potential Doug Jolley of '06) and he'll go down in preseason and we will have shot ourselves in the foot again.

Or we'll draft someone real exciting, a huge playmaker like an O-line player.

On another note, so long Dale Sveum! Best of luck Ned Yost, your team just acquired possibly the most incompetent 3rd base coaches in the league. Brewers fans, prepare to see plenty of arms waving runners to their doom at home plate this season, just ask Manny.

Big Pujols

This years Big Papi? Meet Albert Pujols. This years Mariano? Meet Brad Lidge.

In a lackluster at best postseason that featured a team that barely finished .500, Albert Pujol's monster shot into the rafters of the stadium-formerly-known-as-Enron breathed life into a dying playoffs.

While the Red Sox are still dead, I have to root for the Cardinals. I don't care if the Astros are the little underdog that could, the Cards got their asses beat by the Sox last year and this is their 2nd chance. Not many teams get a 2nd chance. Plus, the 'Stros don't have any history, I want to see Busch Stadium go under with one last championship. Go Mark Mulder and damn Ozzie Guillen once again.

On an as-if-things-couldn't-get-any-worse note, perennial Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae was crushed by that fat piece of crap Sam Adams in the 3rd quarter Sunday and tore his triceps. He will be missing the rest of the year.

On a related note, Vinny Testaverde has reportedly picked up a very large life insurance claim.

The New York Jokes...ahem Jets are still playing this Monday against the Atlanta Vicks and I will be in attendance, possibly with a Wayne Chrebet jersey and a paper bag over my head.

The Reality Sets In

I had this great dream last week, in which visions of Testaverde were dancing in my head, standing up and leading a disheartened Jets team to an improbable wild card spot. He blazed past the Buccaneers and never looked back, picking up win after win and flexing those 41 year old biceps and tossing bombs to a rejuvenated Lav Coles, who quickly made Jets fans forget the explosive Santana Moss.

Then I woke up. And found myself overcome with a gigantic freaking headache.

Vinny tossed up a couple of picks, including one in a game changing point in the 4th quarter that put the nail in the coffin. He also inexplicably fumbled 2 snaps. The Jets lost opportunity after opportunity to win this game and placed every Jets fan properly back into his seat.

Oh and Lav Coles? 4 catches for 33 yards. Would anyone like to try the insult for injury platter? Sure, Santana Moss had a measly 10 catches for 173 yards and 2 TDs. Ahem, ouch.

I cannot believe I actually deep down had hope. I should know better, Doug Brien taught me last year against the Steelers. The Jets can't win. There is a reason they haven't won a Super Bowl since Joe Willy called his shot against the Colts. It is a mode of thought.

You see folks, the Jets see Tim Couch, Doug Johnson, Quincy Carter, etc etc on the free agent market. All young, mobile QBs. And the Jets seemed to have seen a better option. Our GM must have been walking through the Jets headquarters and seen a highlight reel from 1998. He saw Vinny Testaverde throwing bombs to a then concussion-free Wayne Chrebet and something clicked in his tiny little brain: Vinny in 1998 must be the same a Vinny 8 years later.

Just like Curtis Martin this year is better than having LaMont Jordan next year (yes 148 yards today for Martin but thats an abberation).

Just like Laverneaus Coles now is better than Santana Moss this and next year.

The Jets are constantly on a calendar that does not include next year. They are only concerned with the present, quick fix that does nothing next year. Every game is like watching a highlight reel of yesteryear, except there are no highlights and instead, only reminders of whats gone wrong.

Reading John Clayton's article on the fact that the Jets are looking at Steve McNair for '06 made bile come into my mouth. Thats like buying a beat up used car from Steve's Auto Lot. No warranty, no garauntees except that its going to cost you in the long run. And thats the story of the New York Jets.

So go on Jets, keep on picking the 41 year olds off of their couches and throw them into the NFL. Ignore the roster cut QBs who saw action all of preseason. The New York Jets are the damn Big Apple Circus and I'm becoming ashamed to invest my time into the team.

In baseball, my favorite Venezuelian Ozzie Guillen won a trip to the World Series, where we'll get to hear more of his fun little soundbites for at least another week or so! Joy! I can only hope that the Astros can shut up this yapping idiot and put him in his place. I'm tempted to say screw it and root for Guillen so that he'll go ahead and retire like he claims and never be heard of again.

A Weekend of Redemption

V-v-vinny and the Jets!

Yes, the New York Jets won this weekend and they scored more than 10 points. Was it an act of God? No. Just a 41-year old native of Long Island with a few miles left in the tank. What Vinny came out and did this week deserves more coverage than the blurbs that have been in the papers. 2 weeks ago, this guy was sitting on his couch watching Dead-Arm Pennington and Jay Fiedler getting take out on consecutive series. Two weeks later, he was thrown into the fire of the NFL once again.

Now, I'm going to be realistic. He lead two scoring plays and the real story of the game was the phenomenal play of the defense. He ended up with 163 yards and an INT. Those are mediocre at best numbers, BUT at least the ball found the endzone. Every game will be this ugly and every win will probably be uglier, but the standings don't show the score of the game so I'll take it.

We still will not make the playoffs.

Cinderella story cries are being shouted from papers and Sportscenter, Chris Berman made some elaborate connection with Vinny and some other guy that involved the Super Bowl blah blah etc. etc. STOPPIT! This is a soon to be 42 year old veteran who entered the league 19 years ago, the Jets are NOT going to the playoffs. No, it's much worse than that. The Jets are going to go 8-8 and get a crappy draft pick and no playoff run. Thats the way it goes in the NFL, the best make the playoffs and the worst make the draft. The borderliners get the boot.

The D played a great, at times sloppy game, with an INT from Ty Law, 3 sacks and 2 more INTs that were nullified by penalties. If anything wins us games this season it will be Abe, Ellis, DeWayne, Barrett, Reed and the Law.

If anyone happened to see this rather offensive cartoon on the Bucs official NFL web site, ridiculing the Jets QB situation, in which Herm has both Bollinger and Vinny sitting in his office and he proceeds to play a humiliating game of "eenie-meenie-miney-mo" to choose which QB will be "victimized" by the Tampa D. It ends on Bollinger, WRONG, and he screams. I have checked back and the cartoon has mysteriously disappeared, much like the prestige of the Bucs D over the past few years.

In other news,

The New York Yankees are out of the playoffs.

Moose choked, once again, in a big game for the Yankees. Before the game George Steinbrenner had said that this game was in one person's hands--The Manager. Thats right Joe, you may have just shown yourself the door. You've had a hell of a run and you're respected by all, but it seems the Boss is ready for another Billy Martin spastic-type manager in the form of Sweet Lou Piniella. Tonight may have been the end of a Yankee era, and further proof that the Yankee Dynasty is tired and over.

My aching heart is soothed, knowing that the chants of 2-000 live on at least until next year. 5 years Yankee fans, 5 years since you won it all. And for Red Sox fans? 1 year.

Ah, its good to have the upper hand.

Oh and I want to start the "Don't Trade Manny" rally call. Where the hell else are we going to find 144 RBIs and 45 HR per year?

Tommorow I'll start the "Keep the Blob Off the Bench" rally call, to get David Wells in shape.

Every Fairy Tale Must Come To An End

It seems like it was over before I even watched the first inning of playoff baseball.

The Red Sox looked truly outmatched in this series, with Bobby Jenks looking like Mariano in his prime. The bats simply did not get it done, and worse, the defense was embarrassing. Although, the D was just as bad last year but had the bats and pitching to clean up.

The story of the game was the 6th inning. No outs, bases loaded and the next 3 batters went down 1-2-3. I truly thought that God had set this stage for Graffanino to redeem himself, but I guess I was wrong. El Duque looked unstoppable, like he was 26, not 36.

I don't feel as wronged this year as I have in years passed.

At least this wasn't the Yankees. At least this wasn't Aaron Boone.

I do feel for the youngsters though. Those who don't know better. The kid who was crying on his Dad's shoulder at the end of the game. They are in for a lifetime of pain, being probably too young to even remember what 2004 felt like.

The truly heartbreaking result of this series is the fact that this is the true end of 2004. Millar will be gone, Manny will be gone, Billy Mueller will be gone, and theres a good chance that the Caveman will never again lead off a Red Sox game.

The 2006 Red Sox team may boast a Manny-less David Ortiz, which will see Ortiz challenge Barry Bonds for the single season walk record. Pitchers just will not give Ortiz anything to hit. Not to mention the fact that Ortiz without Manny will be a very different Big Papi in attitude. I predict that big smile will be flashed much less and his happiness may falter. Losing Manny is effectively losing Big Papi as we know him.

And that, my friends, makes me sadder than any Red Sox loss this season.

All there's left to do is give one more big thank you to the 2004 Boston Red Sox. Thank you Manny, Johnny, Billy and even El Bencho. And thank you Pedro, Dave Roberts and Orlando Cabrera once again. You will never be forgotten in Bean Town.

2005 Boston Red Sox RIP.

Am I manager or a disgrace to the game?

Does anyone really wanna see this fat arrogant face covered in champagne?

Hell no.

Cowboy up Sox.

And hit a foul ball right into Ozzie Guillen's big mouth so he'll shut up for 2 seconds.

Gametime.

Keep the faith.

"Don't Let Us Win Tommorow"

The rally call from 2004 is all that can save us now.

Given 12 hours to digest the Red Sox gut-wrenching loss to a nothing better than mediocre Chicago team, I have renewed faith.

Sure, lightning just doesn't strike in the same place twice, but then again, teams don't come back from 0-3 deficits against the Bronx Bombers in a Championship series right? WRONG.

The Red Sox have been in this situation twice in the past 6 years and both time prevailed. Once against Cleveland in 1999 and against the A's in 2003. 0-2 in both scenarios and 3 straight wins in both scenarios. Not to mention that both those teams were arguably better than the current White Sox.

One more factor, the Red Sox don't lose at home. Period. The Fenway Faithful will show up and make a noticeable difference. Don't boo Graffanino, mark my words, he will be this years Mark Belhorn. Hes only a Pesky Pole shot away from redeeming himself.

Wake has been our best pitcher all year and if I remember correctly it was Millar and Damon last year down 0-3 commenting..."If we win today, we've got Schilling tommorow and game 7 we've got everyone going"

Well, it'll be game 5, and it will be everyone.

So man up, cowboy up, believe, keep the faith and goddamnit win a ball game.

Cause the truth is...with the Red Sox you never know when you're going to get a moment like this....

Tony Graffa-Buckner

Just when Sox fans think with all their hearts that they have moved on, forgiven and forgotten the follies of Red Sox years passed, this happens.

Tony Graffanino recreated the Bill Buckner play of 1986, except this time a routine double play ball at second base rather than first. My stomach dropped when I watched it. The replay makes my body tense. I won't be able to watch Sportscenter for at least a week, for fear of seeing a repeat of this horrific play.

Last night and tonight have made me realize something that had not dawned on me until now: these are not "the idiots". This is not the 2004 Boston Red Sox. This team has no chemistry other than the lovefest between Manny and Ortiz (which even seems to be waivering). When Gabe went down on (surprise, surprise!) GRAFFANINOS home run in September, all unity was lost.

Thinking back, Theo Epstein said something a few weeks ago to the tune of "even idiots grow up". Well, does that mean they stop having fun playing baseball? I haven't seen a Red Sox player smile in months, no hugs, no handshakes (COME BACK ORLANDO!) and no kind words in the clubhouse :cough: Foulke :cough:.

Bottom line is, I don't like the grown up idiots. The grown up idiots don't come back from 0-2 deficits in a 5 game do-or-die series.

Friday is a complete toss up. Apparently Wake is starting which means we'll either see 15 strikeouts or 15 homers. We could go a postseason series this year without seeing the hero and Papal representative Curt Schilling make an appearance. The so-called ace of Boston will potentially not even make a start. This could be a terribly devastating series if we get swept. Affecting possibly whether we see Johnny Damon in a Red Sox uniform ever again. Not to mention Keith Foulke, who already has his flight booked out of Boston, never to return right now.

I fear this game and I hope to God that the Sox don't lay down to a team that hasn't won a postseason series since 1917. Please, this is a calling of bats and arms, knuckle up Red Sox and save this season. Lets keep playing some baseball for a few more days.

And don't listen to Kevin Millar, the fans are with you Red Sox, you have more than just your team.

Go ahead, it's time.

So it all comes down to this...

7 months.
159 games.
1431 innings.
38637 outs.

A season on the line. 3 games will decide the fate of a team. This is playoff baseball, and I couldn't be happier.

The Boston Red Sox season began with the New York Yankees and its only right for it to end with the New York Yankees. The division championship is on the line, not to mention the wild card. I get butterflies just thinking about this weekends matchup. This is almost unheard of, after 159 games the Yankees are up by only one game. ONE GAME! These teams are so evenly matched that every game is a toss up...if not for Fenway Park.

The Sox have the best home record in baseball at 52-26. The Fens has broken a lot of hearts, but recent history has changed that. Senor Clutch has SINGLE HANDEDLY changed that.

No longer is there reason to fear every pitch, because there is always that chance that Mo will blow or Papi will bat in the 9th. If Ortiz isn't MVP by now, I don't quite understand what the meaning of the award is. Yes, A-Rod has been consistent and he plays the field, BUT Gary Sheffield is the real hero of the Yanks. Sheff has batted some unbelievable avg of .360+ with runners on while A-Rod has done it below .300. Papi has won games with the swing of the bat time and time again.

Friday we see Wang (ha) face off against Boomer Wells. This is going to be a slobberknocker. I predict both starting pitchers to be out by the 5th, at most. An unpredictable weekend ahead of us and I leave with the quote of a well known man...

"These are the times that try men's souls." -Tommy Paine

Lets kick some ass BoSox. (And keep Bucky F. Dent out of Fenway Pahk)

There is no order, only chaos.

Well, someone is going to have to chop off Chad Pennington's arm cause he garauntees hes going to play this Sunday despite the fact that he is now reportedly out for the season with another torn rotator cuff.

The over/under for Pennington this season was 3 games... It seemed laughable at first, but apparently Vegas knows more than we think. More than I do atleast, I can't believe I bought into the preseason hype. I can't believe I bought into the team's reports that Penningtons arm strength had returned... I'm too gullable.

An ad is in the New York Post- Wanted QB who can throw over 10 yards. They've recieved at least 4 responses: Jonathan Quinn, Jesse Palmer, Doug Johnson, and a crack addict--I mean Quincy Carter.

The season is effectively over. Brooks Bollinger is not Tom Brady. Hes not even Trent Dilfer. Hell, hes not even Tim Hasselback. I laugh at the confidence Kevin Mawae places on this rook. This is no longer a season, its a draft lottery. Gooooo whoever is playing the Jets!!!

I guess the season is over, 13 more games, 13 more losses is all I can hope for.

Matt Leinart, welcome to the Gang Green?

Things keep getting getting worse for the Jets, or should I say better. The latest on the QB situation... Pennington's career is most likely over and Feidler is apparently out 6 weeks.

Chad Pennington for 6 more years scared me, but with this new news about his career being over, hope has again been established. Atleast this quick dismantle of a potential playoff team after 3 weeks isn't as painful as losing it on the last game of the season (something the Red Sox are in danger of).

So my advice to the Jets. Throw the season. The Cavs did it in the NBA a couple years ago and landed Lebron. With a strong crop of QB's in this years draft, now is our chance to take a stud from a winning program, who is strong enough to play in the NFL, to build our team around.

When all else is lost, faith is all that remains. I must find reasons to stay optimistic before my life comes crashing down. The Jets I can laugh off. This time next week if the Red Sox have collapsed... different story.

Full Collapse

This will go down as one of the most pathetic Sundays in recent New York Jet history. The supposed revamped Jets offense was only that in the sense that it was disgustingly offensive to anyone watching.

The game was doomed from the 2nd quarter on. Pennington went down. Then Fiedler went down. Brooks Bollinger started warming up. Pennington went back in. From that point on, there was not a pass thrown farther than the 5-7 yard range.

The Jets offense is now nonexistent. Pennington claims the pain in his shoulder is equal to when he initially injured his shoulder last season. Herm has said Brooks Bollinger may start this coming week. Can I get a Quincy Carter? I don't care what drugs hes on, I'd rather him than Bollinger.

The D was top notch. Defensive TD, key forced fumbles and recoveries, OT interception to save the game, only to let Pennington come within an inch of a safety and eventually blow the game again.

My deepest concern beyond the overall patheticness of the offense is the fact that we have an injury prone QB set to make 60 million plus through the year 2011. Yea, that bothers me.

Seeing my 60 million dollar QB pull a 21 QB rating, that bothers me.

Realizing that my 60 million dollar QB cannot throw farther than 10 yards? THAT bothers me.

Seeing my 60 million dollar QB fail, time and time again, including an OT INT, and NEVER seeing the least bit of emotion or frustration? That really, really bothers me.

I hope the media eats him alive this week and I hope he asks for a trade out of New York. Right now, I could go the rest of my life without ever seeing Chad Pennington throw another INT or 5 yard comeback route to a receiver again.

Go Vilma, go Abraham, go Barrett and go James Reed. Oh and above all go Red Sox. The most important 3 game series of the year is upon you and its go big or go home.

In the words of an idiot, Cowboy Up.

Living On A Prayer

Yes, we are officially on the outside looking in. Truthfully, I didn't even consider the possibility of missing the playoffs. Timlin imploded and Manny remembered that he doesn't run out ground balls at Tropicana Field. The helplessness a fan can feel while watching games be blown is enough to drive a man mad. I have nothing more to say, 1/2 game back and nothing looking up.

Would someone tell Barry Bonds to shut the hell up? If I had been a press member at his conference yesterday when he claimed that steroids were not a pertinent issue right now and challenged the media, reporters that is, to go and do something about Katrina. Let me ask you something Mr. Balco, why don't YOU do something? Instead of coming back for 20 games left of the regular season, why don't you take a few million of the engorged salary you make and help out some Katrina victims? I mean, sure it's easier to tell a bunch of daily beat writers who are pining for a story to make a semi-decent salary that THEY should be out saving the world. What a coward.

Not to mention the fact that there are teens dying because of steroid use. This is becoming a widespread epidemic that IS in fact, Mr. Bonds, a pertinent issue. Go down to Capitol Hill and tell some of the protesting mothers who have lost children to steroid use that the issue isn't important. Lets see just how much of a man you truly are.

When he hits home run #715 and surpasses George Herman Ruth, I hope that no one reacts. I hope that he isn't cheered, isn't booed, isn't even questioned at the interviews after the game. I want people to simply stop caring. Maybe if we all ignore Bonds he'll just go away forever.

Or someone could give him a nice little shiner with a D-size battery...

Who Didn't See This Coming?

Yes, the Yankees are officially a 1/2 game out of first place. As a Sox fan, I'm not surprised, maybe I paid a little less attention to the looming Empire because of the fact that we're coming off a World Series year and I've felt invincible. But looking ahead, never has a series to end the year been more anticipated than the famous Boston Massacre weekend of 1978. The three game series with the Yanks at home to wrap up 162 games could very well determine the AL East division winner...and with the scorching hot Indians 2.5 games behind the floundering White Sox, the wild card could very well be secured before the AL East division winner is determined.

Before I rant about the horrid loss tonight to the D-rays, let me emphasize the collapse of the Chicago White Sox. This is a team that was on pace to finish with the best record in baseball, ahead of the juggernaut that is the St. Louis Cardinals. On AUGUST 1ST the White Sox were 15 games ahead in the AL Central and owned the best record in baseball. They were practically popping the champagne. And now, they are a complete and utter mess. Freddy Garcia looked as if he was ready to kick and scream and cry on the field tonight in their latest loss to the Indians. The White Sox last october victory...? 1917. Thats 88 years folks, 2 longer than the fateful Red Sox streak. I have to laugh when I hear or read interviews with these Chicago players as well, who will claim they know nothing about a collapse in progress and that its simply the media making more of something than there really is. They couldn't be more wrong. This is a collapse of epic proportion, you thought the Red Sox 1978 collapse was bad? They were 14 games up in July. Making this current disaster in progress 1 game worse than the Buckner series. Wake up White Sox, cause you've got a man named C.C. knocking on your door and yes, his hat is most definitely more crooked than ever.

Back to the RED Sox own personal little disaster. I mean, at least this one was expected. What can you expect though from a bullpen that is expected to be in the game at least 6 innings a game. A bullpen that harbors names like Papelbon and Harville and a rookie named Hansen who was just drafted this summer, GIMME A BREAK!!! Everybody knew the bullpen had issues long before the All-Star break when Foulke went down and Schill was getting hammered in AA ball. An overused, aging Mike Timlin cannot anchor a bullpen. As much as I love the guy and cannot get enough of his tenacious attitude on the field, he is not the answer. The bullpen is worse than that of 2003, another year we did not have a closer and EVERYONE knows what happened at the end of that season. We may not even have to wait for the playoffs to see a similar result this year, it could be making an appearance Sept 29-Oct 1 against the same fated rival. Oh and aside from the bullpen Edgar's at 29 errors and counting...Edgar being Edgar? And for a while this past spring I thought we got him for his defense, I mean, *gulp* has anyone talked to Nomah lately? Manny 0-5 and strikes out to end the game. The only upside, Papi blasts another homer (and I do mean BLASTS) on his quest to become the first DH to win the MVP. Get it together Sox.

Looking back to the weekend though...THE JETS WON!! The panic button for the New York Jets has been covered for now...though Curtis is hurt, details unknown as to how long. I liked what I saw against Miami, the D continued to look strong. Ty Law is looking like on of the smartest pickups in the NFL this past offseason. He is always one step ahead of his man and anticipates routes every play. While he had no INT, he broke up a good number of pass plays. Chad looked better, barring that fumble on the FIRST snap he took. He threw with a bit more confidence, but he did still look a bit weak. His throws were at times lame ducks and poor decisions, but maybe with time he will improve. He needs to once again avoid the media and focus on the Jaguars this week. The Jags shut down Manning on Sunday which could spell very, very bad news for the New York Jets offense. I did enjoy seeing Chad and Coles hook up again for a TD. Though, I also felt burned a bit by Santana Moss's streaking TD catches to win the game Monday night. The guy is a game changing playmaker no matter where he goes and you have to respect him for it. I'd like to see the Jets execute at least 3 TD scoring drives this weekend against the Jags. For one year, just one year, I want to be proud of the Jets offense.

Oh, and I part with the best news of the weekend...the Fins, Pats and Bills lost, meaning the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS are in first place.

Papi MVP?

40 homers and counting, David Ortiz hit YET ANOTHER game winning homer. If Papi could just play some average 1B he would be a lock. Instead, the favorite seems to remain A-rod and there is nothing that will change that. Francona looked like Grady Little yesterday, leaving Arroyo in for far too long with a rested bullpen ready to go from solid starts this past weekend. Foulke came in too early and Timlin, well maybe he shouldn't have come in at all. The fact of the matter is, the magic number now stands at 18 games. Am I counting too early? Maybe, but a division title would be the next best thing to a World Series championship, simply because that is becoming the new hill the Sox can't seem to climb.

Other observations...

-In the MNF game last night, I loved the fight that ensued between Trotter and Mathis. Tenacity is what I like to see in these games and rivalries in the NFC are needed.

-Dontrelle Willis had better be the Cy Young and the Silver Slugger at P position, did anyone else see that 2nd deck 420 foot bomb he hit yesterday in the midst of his 7th complete game?

-The Jets are already talking about arm trouble with Pennington. Curtis is 32 years old. The Green Machine has its finger hovering above the Panic button...please...don't push it yet.

-Carson Palmer is going to break out this season. He's under the radar on a team that isn't expected to do much. Chad Johnson will make him a star

-Derrek Lee's Triple Crown hopes are effectively dead. He no longer leads the league in Avg or RBI and Andruw Jones looks to be the Home Run King

-Adrian Peterson may miss a start this Saturday because he is reportedly skipping classes. What an idiot. This is the last thing OU needs, as Peterson is the only thing that has gone right for their overrated team this season.

-Barry Bonds and 60,000 completely oblivious morons in SBC park are the ONLY people in this country who want to see him play. Fans are not going to forgive and forget all that went on with BALCO this offseason and I hope that they let Bonds hear it. He is a selfish player who wants nothing but to increase his home run #'s and cares nothing for his team or the game and especially not the fans.

-GIVE PAPI THE MVP!!!

"It's scary if you're a Jets fan..."

Those are the all too truthful words of Christopher Berman on NFL Live last night. The New York Jets played one of the worst games in franchise history yesterday afternoon, highlights including 6 fumbles and an INT from our 60 million dollar man Pennington. Yea, I'm scared. His arm strength looked worse than ever, so bad that at one point Pennington attempted to throw a ball out of the back of the endzone from about the 8 yard line and UNDERTHREW IT. Thats approximately a 19 yard pass and he couldn't even get it out of the endzone. It's unfair to credit the Jets D with 27 points scored against with the unbelievable amount of turnovers. Herm needs to hide Chad from the TV, papers and internet because this is a guy who, in my opinion, is easily influenced by the media. If he hears people saying that hes lost it at age 29, his arm is dead, hes going to believe it. The thought of Jay Fiedler commandeering a restructured Jets offense has never looked so good right now. Curtis got a measly 57 yards, but when you're down 14-0 in the first quarter, RBs don't see too much action the rest of the game. It was a painful forgettable Sunday and I can only hope that this isn't a preview of the next 15 games, because with all the preseason hype, I won't be able to deal with it.

On the baseball front, the Sox lost 2 of 3 to the Yanks in the Bronx, but yesterday Wakefield stepped up again. He threw a beautiful game, a CG 3-hitter with 12 strikeouts for good measure, but Randy was just one step better and Mo wasn't going to lose to the Sox again. Mr. Comeback Steroids Player Of The Year got lucky and hit what turned out to be the game winning homer against Wake. Keep your head up Wake, you are the man. On to Toronto where we need a sweep to get closer to locking up the division and keeping the Damn Yanks out of the playoffs.

What time is it?

Gametime. The first NFL Sunday of the year, fire up the barbecue, ready the pigskin and throw on your favorite jersey cause it is ON. Who will be this years Chargers? Can anyone stop Mike Vick? Will the Pats ever lose at home? Will Chad Pennington and Lav Coles reunite for their 2002 magic? Will Detroits trio of wideouts equal a successful season for the Lions? Will LaDanian Tomlinson rush for 2000 yards? WILL SOMEBODY PLEASE DETHRONE THE PATRIOTS?! I'm so excited I can barely think. Chris Berman will be on in a few minutes to reassure me that today isn't just some wonderful dream, and then Terry Bradshaw will be on to remind me why I don't watch Fox's pregame show. The Jets need a strong start this year, it's going to be tough marching into KC, which is about as close to a college football atmosphere as a team will get in the NFL. I will look to Vilma to lead the D and look for Chad to prove the critics wrong. Coles won't be a big factor with newly acquired Patrick Surtain covering him. Look for Derrick Blaylock to impact the game, spelling Curtis Martin and looking to prove something against his former team.

My prediction: Jets 28 Chiefs 24

Now, I must put on my Chrebet jersey, rub my Joe Namath signed picture and ready myself for the day. J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!!!

Finally...

The NFL. Hard-hitting, trash talking, sacks, touchdowns and pancakes, yes, pancakes the one stat attributed to offensive linemen. I've been counting down to this day since the Doug Brien cost the Jets a trip to the AFC championship (even if the Pats would have destroyed us anyways). While the Gang Green isn't playing until Sunday, I will still be glued to the TV hoping for the improbable, if not impossible, that the Rrrrrraiders could somehow top the Pats. The sad truth is, even with all of the Raiders hype this season with the additions of Randy Moss and LaMont "the chainsaw" Jordan, the defense has made no improvement. Last seasonopposing QBs averaged a rating odf 99.4 against the Raiders D. The only thing the Raiders can hope for in this matchup is a shootout, which is plausible with all of the hits the Pats took to the defense this past offseason. My prediction: 30-14 Patriots, and Randy Moss will be made to look like Keyshawn Johnson. Friggin Belicheck.

Red Sox show heart in a comeback win against Scoscia and the Angels. Is it just me, or does Scoscia always look incredibly displeased with life. He kinda makes me smile.

Wake Up Call

Senor Clutch stikes again. Another walk-off homer from the Big Man. Is it just me, or does it seem like this happens on a regular basis ever since the Holy Yankee Series of last October? He only has 5 career walk-off shots in the regular season, 2 this year. But while the majesty of Big Papi will absorb and garner most if not all of the attention from this game, the bigger story here is the longest tenured red sox player Tim Wakefield. The guy goes out and saves a hurting bullpen and proves once again how much of a gamer he is. A complete game and he apparently told Belli that he could go about 5 more innings. Gotta love the rubber arm of a knuckleballer. Tim Wakefield is the silent leader of this Red Sox team, through his charitbale work off the field and quiet, yet competitive demeanor on the field. Seeing Wake strike out that last batter he faced and pump his fist with the tenacity of a 101 mph firethrower gave me chills. The players want to win for him. In a season of suspect pitching for this Boston team, maybe we will get to see Wake turn out some October brilliance and fill in the void that is Curt Schilling.

Mo loses to the D-rays in the 9th off a Robinson Cano error at 2B. Bellhorn helps the Sox by sitting on the bench, watching a routine play become the deciding blow against Sweet Lou and the Bad News Rays. I miss that greasy-walk-or-strikeout savior at second.

Coincidence that on the same night Ortiz hits another emphatic walk off homer, the Yankees collapse and lose to the Drays? I think not.

The Fall of the ESPN Empire

When I think of ESPN, I think monopoly. Sure, there are other sports networks from which to choose, Fox Sports Net, CSS in the south, NESN in the northeast, but when it comes down to it, ESPN is a national titan. While I used to love ESPN for their sports reporting, I feel that the Disney owned Empire has swayed too far from the concept of sports and wandered into the dreaded tabloid realm of entertainment. The network no longer reports on simply sports stories; rather, they feed viewers stories of players sleeping with other players wives, outrageous contract hold outs (Sportscenter has been renamed T.O.center), drug arrests, weaponry arrests, domestic violence etc. They will run a story on how they promote the role of morality in sports, denouncing steroid use or gambling in sports, then cut to an hour long commercial for Las Vegas in another episode of World Series of Poker. Furthermore, the network promotes itself more than any other network. Yes, the Sportscenter ads are clever, but the network is so self indulgent, it takes a viewers attention away from the sport and focuses on some pointless Kenny Mayne trip to Alaska to find polo playing eskimoes. The self promotion bleeds from the network itself down to each and every SC anchor, prying for just one of their witty little catch phrases to capture the attention of the public. The original catch phrase king Chris Berman can still get away with it, but hearing Stuart Scott shout "BOOYA" for every single Bonds/Griffey homerun is just plain annoying (not to mention the fact that year by year Stuarts right eye travels a bit farther from focus). The actual reporters on SC get the least recognition. I have to feel for guys like Pedro Gomez, assigned to bunk with Bonds and report on what color cast he has on his leg as a daily update each day. It is seriously laughable. Not only are the stories at times laughable, but also the way that the reporters and anchors tend to act buddy-buddy with the athletes defeats the purpose of their job. The hard questions never get asked because the anchor is too busy worrying about whether or not the athlete will hate him. My best advice would be to get back to the basics, when ESPN was young and trying to make a name. Get away from family-friendly Disney and become an independent sports news network. And for god's sake, get rid of that new ESPN TV entertainment magazine. Entertainment Tonight for sports is not necessary in the least. No one, and I mean, NO ONE needs to hear Shaq rap. I mean, did anyone see Kazaam? Ugh.

Props go to Rich Eisen though, King of the NFL Network.

Brandon who?

Brandon McCarthy shut down the potent Sox offense (minus a sore rockstar). The rook has made 6 appearances this year previous to this start and posted a 6.00 ERA in those appearances. With a resurgent Yankee team a mere 3 games behind in the division, you simply cannot lose games like this at home. Sure, the White Sox have been the surprise of the year, but given the fact that you have a rookie who has been riding the pine for the entire season, at home, making a spot start, being shut out for 7 innings is unacceptable.

Furthermore, claiming that the Red Sox were "encouraged by the performance of former ace Curt Schilling", when the former ace gave up four runs, nine hits, three walks and a hit batter in 6 1/3 innings is sickening in itself. The brightside? This is the first start Schill has made this season in which he has surrendered fewer than 5 runs. While I'm glad that Schilling and Red Sox brass are encouraged by his mediocre performance, I can't say I'm happy hes starting right now. He labors every inning. His fastball has no bite and his curveball is almost nonexistent. He either needs to tell Francona he wants to go to the bullpen or he needs to pack it up for the season, because come the playoffs, a five-run Schilling start is going to kill the Sox in a best of 3 series. Give me Papelbon, give me Gonzalez, hell, call up John Burkett and give him a start, but please, let Schilling fully and correctly finish his rehab. I don't care how good Schilling claims he feels, hes lying. He is ineffective and looking more and more like an old man who needs to hang it up. He'll always be a hero in Boston, but if he simply can't get it done, then he needs to sit down and wait, cause right now, hes not helping anybody.

At least Foulke didn't give up a run.
